The Public Services Committee met Wednesday June 6, 2007 at Orchard House.
Present: Rep. Bob Abels, Chair, Rep. Dennis Flanigan, Rep. John Prete, Rep.
Maggie Bruno, and Police Chief Robert Gill.
Absent: Rep. Pam Mauriello, Rep. Ralph Coppola, and Rep. Gail Infantino
Chairman Bob Abels called the meeting to order at 7:40 pm. The following items were addressed:
1. To consider, and if appropriate, approve the Board of Police Commissioners request for the following transfer:
From: 4201-421.10-00 Salary & Wages $( 138,544)
To: 4201-421.10.90 Overtime $ 134,044
4201-421.42-04 Water & Gas $ 4,500
Chief Robert Gill explained the transfer was requested because the overtime account ran out in April and expenses that needed to be covered could not wait for the new year’s budget to go into effect. Special detail events such as the Memorial Day Parade, Branford Fireworks, and the Branford Festival require overtime police personnel amounting to an average of $7,100.00 per week. The transfer to Water & Gas was to cover the increase in the cost of utilities. The salary and wages account showed a surplus due to vacancies in the department, including an officer who is being deployed to Iraq, an officer who is moving and has resigned, and injured officers whose salaries are covered by Worker’s Compensation.
After discussion, a motion was made by Rep. Dennis Flanigan to accept this transfer, seconded by Rep. John Prete, and the motion was passed by unanimous vote 4-0.
Chief Gill expressed his thanks to the PSC for their cooperation in dealing with the Fire Department budget. The PSC wished Chief Gill good luck on his upcoming retirement.
2. To consider, and if appropriate, approve the Finance Director request for the following transfer:
From: 4904-494.59-13 Contingency $( 14,250)
To: 4901-491.20-19 Volunteer Fire Stipend $ 14,250
As no representative from the Fire Department attended the meeting, the above item was re-referred.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm by Chair Bob Abels.
Respectfully submitted,
Representative Maggie Bruno
