Branford Participates in UCONN’s Fescue to the Rescue Program

The Town of Branford has volunteered to participate in UCONN’s Fescue to the Rescue program. Coordinated by Dr. Karl Guillard of the Department of Plant Science at UCONN’s Storrs campus, the program establishes demonstration turf areas showing the public how lawn quality can be maintained and threats to water quality reduced using alternative turfgrass species like fescues. Tall and fine leaf fescues are low maintenance grasses that require less fertilizer and less water than other popular lawn species. Fescues are tolerant to shade, maintain their greenness during the summer, and keep their quality at higher mowing levels. As part of the program in 2008 and 2009, fescue seed was supplied to the town at no cost by the Oregon Tall and Fine Fescue Commissions.

The planting of the fescue seed is coordinated by Alex Palluzzi, Jr. of the Branford Parks and Recreation Department. The demonstration area is located on the town green directly in front of the town hall between Main Street and Town Hall Drive. In addition to Branford, other towns participating in the Fescue to the Rescue program are Guilford, Madison, Deep River, Portland and Westport.
