BRANFORD BOARD OF POLICE COMMISSIONERS
TRAFFIC COMMITTEE
The Traffic Committee of the Board of Police Commissioners will meet at 7:00PM on Monday, November 9, 2009 at Police Headquarters to consider the following:
A. To receive an update from the Chief on the requests for crosswalks on Short Beach Road at its intersections with Brocketts Point Road and Double Beach Road.
B. To receive an update from the Chief on a request to change the timing on the traffic light on Main Street (4th Ward) and Kirkham Street.
C. To receive an update from the Chief on an advisory opinion from the DOT on a potential traffic light on Brushy Plains Road at its intersection with Parish Farms Road.
D. To consider, and if appropriate, act on a request for a Handicapped Parking sign in the vicinity of 1251 Main Street. (Tabled from October meeting)
E. To revise approvals from the October meeting concerning parking restrictions at the War Memorial Triangle in Stony Creek.
F. To consider, and if appropriate, act on a request for crosswalk signage on Cedar Street near its intersection with Palmer Road.
G. To consider, and if appropriate, act on a request for speed bumps on Juniper Point Road.
H. To consider, and if appropriate, act on a request from the Fire Marshall for signage for an established fire lane at the Walsh Intermediate School.
I. For informational purposes only: a previously approved fire lane on Rice Road (Edgewater Condominiums)
J. To consider, and if appropriate, act on a request from the Stony Creek Association for the following:
1. Install a “No Parking” sign on the curve opposite the Stony Creek Market. The curb is already painted and there is a marking on the street where the sign should go.
2. Add to the 15 Minute Parking sign in front of the post office the following time limits: Mon thru Fri 8AM to 5PM and Sat 8AM to 12PM Except Holidays.
3. Paint no parking curb on the west side of Thimble Islands Road north from West Point Road to the “No Parking Here to Corner” sign. A painted curb would reinforce the no parking zone.
4. Paint no parking curb on the west side of Thimble Islands Road south from Halls Point Road south about ½ car length. Technically, this is a no parking zone for 25 feet from the corner, but as in other areas, we are trying to maximize the number of parking spaces. The goal here is to improve visibility for motorists stopped at the stop sign on Halls Point Road.
5. On the west side of Thimble Islands Road beside the monument triangle, paint no parking hash marks on the street for 25 feet from the corner or Halls Point Road. There is a fog line painted on the street that makes it appear like a parking area. We don’t want a sign here, because it would detract from the monuments. The goal is the same as item 4.
6. Paint no parking curb on the new bump-out in front of the beach. The bump-out was supposed to prohibit parking in front of the beach, but motorist drive up on it and park. Also, it is hard to see at night, and motorists have hit it.
7. Paint no parking curb on the east side of Thimble Islands Road from the beach crosswalk in front of the church south for 3 feet. Currently, cars park right up to the crosswalk making it difficult to see children in the crosswalk when driving up Thimble Islands Road.
8. On the west side of Thimble Islands Road beside the fountain, paint no parking hash marks on the street. There is a fog line on the street that makes it appear to be a parking zone. The strip is already a no parking zone due to the 25 ft from the corner rule. We do not want a sign.
9. Add to the 4 hr parking signs on Indian Point Road the following time limits: from 6AM to 6PM. This will allow overnight parking for islanders.
10. Large tour buses have been parking on Halls Point Road by the Memorial Triangle. This makes it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through. Also, neighbors complain because the buses are left running. We don’t have a good solution to this problem. We would rather not have tour buses park below the train bridge. We are hoping the police will have a suggestion. NOTE: Some of the above items may have been previously acted on with our approval of the master parking plan for Stony Creek. Am checking with the Town Engineer.
